In my career as a financial analyst, one of the repetitive jobs I performed was reviewing companies’ quarterly financials. While it was always important to see how companies performed relative to expectations, one quarter wasn’t always representative of a full year. For example, apparel retailers typically generate most of their revenues and profits during the back-to-school and holiday shopping seasons, making much of the year seasonally slow. So in addition to looking at a given quarter, say. the quarter ending June 30, it was often informative to see how a company performed over the twelve months ending June 30 as well. That’s called the trailing twelve months, or TTM.
In a similar vein, in baseball, we may see how a player performed in a given month, but that’s an arbitrary cutoff. This report, which I expect to publish every Sunday for the rest of the season, shows how teams and, especially, players have performed over the trailing 30 days. Edwin Encarnacion was the American League Player of the Month for August, but who’ll the best player for the 30 days ending September 12? This report will help you see who’s hot and who’s not. I’ll list to top five in several categories (and the bottom five in a few).
Please use the comments section of you feel there are statistics you’d like to see. I’m not looking to create a lot of new work for myself, and I’m limited by the stats available on a trailing 30 basis from baseball-reference (limited) and FanGraphs (more extensive), but I’ll try to accommodate suggestions, if not this season, then next year.
Anyway, here are the leaders for the 30 days ending Tuesday, September 1. See you again on September 6. In the meantime, I blog about the Pittsburgh Pirates at onthefieldofplay.com.
